Starting Salary Range: $65,146 to $71,660 (DOQ) with an excellent benefits package

The Centre Region Council of Governments is accepting applications for the position of Fire & Life Safety Inspector, for Centre Region Code Administration, which serves seven municipalities (population of 100,000) in Centre County.

This is a technical position that is responsible for a wide array of duties and responsibilities relating to the enforcement, interpretation, and application of building codes, fire codes, safety programs, etc. In addition to inspection of properties in the Centre Region, the position performs a variety of enforcement, education, inspecting, fire safety, and related functions. The position conducts special inspections relating to the safety and habitability of a structure following a fire or other event involving a compromise of the structure.

Qualifications

  • This is an in-person position and physical presence on-site is an essential function.
  • A valid PA driver’s license is required and must be maintained.
  • Criminal background checks and PA Child Abuse History Certification are required.
  • Develops and conducts fire safety education programs for a variety of community groups.
  • Works with the general public and design professionals to answer questions regarding the fire safety of the built environment as it relates to state and locally adopted codes.
  • Engages in careful, detailed review of fire protection system plans and other related documents, identifies any areas of deficiency, and works with the applicant to resolve the identified issues.
  • Schedules inspections/re-inspections, investigates complaints, identifies violations, and enforces code provisions and ordinance requirements.
  • Inspects residential and commercial properties as per the state and locally adopted codes.
  • Utilizes judgment and discretion to determine if violations exist and takes steps to remedy.
  • Is available for emergency calls outside of normal business hours.
  • Reviews inspection results with property owners.

Work Environment

  • Work may be performed in awkward or confining spaces
  • Ability to work in conditions with high or low temperatures
  • Conditions with varying and/or sub-optimal illumination
  • Often required to scale ladders or steep industrial stairs.
  • Often required to work at height on temporary or industrial (many times open grate) platforms/work surfaces.
  • Travel to sites and field locations to perform essential functions of job.
