Program Description: This presentation will discuss some of the critical issues related to detailing of exterior masonry wall systems. Discussed are changes in the masonry materials standards and related building codes that allowed increased assembly strength, and how these changes have improved masonry design. It will focus on use of the code unit strength tables to improve lap splice lengths and wall strength. The overall stability of a structure provides a safe environment to its occupants and to the surrounding area. The presentation will also address the use of masonry lintels and bond beams and why these can provide superior performance for vertical support of masonry, especially in veneer applications. Also discussed will be shelf angle veneer support design methodologies and critical shelf angle details to ensure good performance. Detailing for continuous insulation, impact of thermal bridging as well as lower web areas allowed by ASTM C90 for concrete masonry units and their impacts on performance will be addressed. Wall system detailing practices will be presented to address differential movement of dissimilar materials.

Presenter: W. Mark McGinley, PE, Ph.D, FASTM, FTMS ~ Professor and Endowed Chair for Infrastructure Research, Civil and Environmental Engineering, University of Louisville
