Examples Of Essential Duties
– Review building plans and related documents for compliance with applicable codes and ordinance requirements for commercial, industrial, and residential buildings.
– Perform field inspections of commercial, industrial and residential construction projects.
– Interacts with the public and explains technical information to both technically and non-technically trained individuals.
– Maintains accurate records to document inspections, test results, and additional details pertaining to inspections.
– Maintains computer logs of inspection reports, entering inspection results into permitting software.
– Issue citations to prosecute actors for failure to adhere to the Construction related ordinances of the city and attends court to present evidence for violations.
Typical Qualifications
Education:
– High School diploma or G.E.D. required
– Bachelor’s Degree in architecture, engineering, or related field preferred.
Licenses and Certifications:
– Possession of a current, valid driver’s license issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.
– Minimum of 4 in any of the following ICC or PA UCC Certifications – Comm. Building Insp., Comm. Electric Insp., Comm. Mechanical Insp., Comm. Plumbing Insp., Comm. Energy Insp., Accessibility Insp./Plans Examiner, Comm. Building Plans Examiner, Comm. Electrical Plans Examiner, Comm. Mechanical Plans Examiner, Comm. Plumbing Plans Examiner, Comm. Energy Plans Examiner
– Ability to obtain additional commercial or residential ICC certifications in conformance to a job performance plan developed by the Bureau Chief.

Environmental Conditions
– Exposed to inclement weather and extreme temperatures, including long periods of walking, and standing outdoors.
– Works outdoors and indoors with, or without, heat and/or air conditioning.
– Exposure to noise conditions on construction sites.
– Subject to working on uneven terrain in various soil conditions.
– Job requires walking, squatting, bending, kneeling, reaching, climbing, crawling for up to eight (8) hours a day, frequently in unfavorable weather conditions.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
– Extensive knowledge of codes & standards and current construction procedures/technology.
– Ability to read and comprehend technical manuals, specifications and blueprints related to construction and building systems.
– Ability to interpret, analyze and explain the provisions, scope, and parameters of codes and related ordinances.
– Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
– 3+ years’ experience with interpretation of codes and providing code compliant solutions.
– Ability to safely operate a vehicle on private and public streets in all weather conditions.
